Google earlier this week rolled out a new firmware update to its Pixel Buds A-Series. It introduced a bunch of new features to the most recent Pixel TWS earbuds. We have a bass slider for finer control over bass, a loudness compensation toggle, and improved device switching. But the buds seem to have picked up one more nifty feature that the company didn’t mention in the changelog. Reports suggest the Pixel Buds A-Series are receiving support for manual updates with the latest update.
Firmware updates for Google’s Pixel buds have always been an automatic process with no user control. If your buds are connected and a new update is available, they automatically install it. This may be inconvenient at times as you can’t use the buds while an update is in process.
Google wants to simplify this process by allowing users to manually install available updates when they want. The company was spotted working on manual updates for Pixel buds back in February. It is now seemingly rolling out this ability to the Pixel Buds A-Series. Daniel Bader of Android Police has noticed the new option following the latest update.
According to the report, the settings for the Pixel Buds A-Series feature a new “Firmware update available – Tap to start” menu up top. Tapping it takes you to a splash page with some instructions and a note that the update process could take up to 15 minutes.
Google has also provided a step-by-step guide on how to manually trigger updates on the Pixel Buds A-Series on a support page here. As the company notes, you can access the settings for your Pixel buds from the “Connected devices” menu on your Pixel phone’s settings. If you’re using a device of some other make, you need the Google Pixel Buds app.
Manual updates for the Pixel Buds A-Series isn’t widely available yet
The new option to manually update the Pixel Buds A-Series isn’t available to everyone yet, it seems. The feature is likely rolling out via a server-side change. So even if your Pixel buds have already installed the latest firmware update, it doesn’t guarantee support for manual updates.
Nonetheless, it’s now only a matter of time before Google widely rolls out this feature. Meanwhile, if you’re using your Pixel Buds A-Series with a non-Pixel smartphone, you might also want to update the Google Pixel Buds app to the latest version. You can click the button below to download the latest available update for the app from the Google Play Store.
