A trailer has been released for the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Set for a release exclusively on Netflix in February, the new movie is a legacy sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic which was released in 1974. First look photos were released recently, giving us our first peek at the new cast, and now we have some footage to go with that in the form of a teaser trailer. Check it out below.

In the footage, we can see the old farmhouse where the massacre in 1974 went down, apparently left abandoned for all these years. Someone breaks into the home, and this turns out to obviously be Leatherface, and he fishes out an old flesh mask from a hidden spot in the house. We also see that the saw is back, which isn’t so good for the new group of youths unlucky enough to come across the cannibal’s old family home.

David Blue Garcia directs the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre using a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin. Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues produced for Bad Hombre Films alongside Kim Henkel, Ian Henkel, and Pat Cassidy of Exurbia Films. The cast includes Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Moe Dunford, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, and Jolycon Coy. Olwen Fouéré also stars as Sally, taking over the late Marilyn Burns’ role from the original.

“The film takes place a long time after the original Texas Chainsaw,” Fisher recently told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s about a group of people who come to this town and things don’t quite go as planned. It mixes a lot of important real-life issues with horror themes, which is always something I love.”

Alvarez added, “I think the first movie really hit a nerve when portraying that culture clash between the countryside and the city. Back in the ’70s, the hippies were representing the youth of the city. This time, they’re more like millennial hipsters from Austin who are very entrepreneurial and have a dream of getting away from the city and back to the countryside. They’re trying to gentrify small-town America — and let’s just say they encounter some pushback.”

“It’s basically the same character, who is still alive,” Alvarez also says of the new Leatherface. “Our take on it was this guy probably disappeared after everything he’s done. You know, how do you catch a guy who has a mask? Once he removes the mask and runs away, it’s very easy for him to hide somewhere. This story will pick it up many, many years after the original story. He’s been in hiding for a long, long time, trying to be a good person. These people arriving in this town are going to awaken the giant.”

There have been a wide variety of sequels and reboots in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre timeline. This new movie will only directly acknowledge the original movie, and perhaps that’s best as any other way would probably just make things more confusing. Texas Chainsaw Massacre starts streaming on Netflix on Feb. 18, 2022.
