AI is a lot of things, the one thing it’s not is regulated. Right now, several governments from around the world are trying to find ways of properly regulating AI technology and developing laws around it. The US Department of Justice has appointed its first Chief AI Officer.

AI technology is advancing rapidly, and it’s extremely tough for governmental bodies to keep pace. For example, just a few days ago, OpenAI unveiled Sora. This is an AI video generator that has produced some wildly realistic results. Many results show the typical AI tells, but for the most part, many of the videos will be able to fool most people who see them. This is just one example of the fact that we really need to keep an eye on how quickly AI technology progresses.

The US Justice Department has appointed a Chief AI Officer

The Chief AI Officer is Princeton University Assistant Professor Jonathan Mayer. He holds a Ph. D in computer science and a J.D. from Stanford Law. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland appointed him to this post.

As the Chief AI Officer, Mayer will be in charge of advising the Attorney General and the Justice Department on uncertain matters dealing with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. He will collaborate with these entities and other components of the US government when dealing with matters such as new and unfamiliar technologies.

Along with those duties, Mayer will head the department’s newly established Emerging Technology Board. This board will govern AI technologies along with other technologies such as cybersecurity technology.

This is a major step forward for the US government when it comes to getting a grasp on emerging AI technology. Right now, we’re all still getting a feel for what impacts AI technology will have on the world and on humanity. So, having a dedicated chief officer will ensure that the Department of Justice will always be properly informed about new trends happening in AI.
