Besson is best known for directing the likes of La Femme Nikita, Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, Lucy, and 2019’s Anna, as well as writing and producing all manner of action classics such as Taken, The Transporter, Ong-Bak, and many more.
Dogman
was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at last year’s 80th Venice International Film Festival and is due to be released in select theaters on March 29, 2024, before receiving a wider release on April 5, 2024.
Caleb Landry Jones Has Received Praise for His Performance in Dogman
While we await the theatrical release of Dogman, several reviews and reactions emerged following the movie’s debut at Venice last year. And many heap praise on both Besson’s warped tale of revenge and a career-best performance from Caleb Landry Jones. Collider’s Perri Nemiroff applauded Jones’ central performance and was “taken” with Dogman despite its flaws.
“Are some elements of the film bizarre & flawed? Yes! But with Caleb Landry Jones’ work serving as a powerful heart for the film, one with a wildly charming dynamic with his canine costars, it’s hard not to be taken by this one, especially as a dog lover.”
Jordan Mintzer of THR, meanwhile, found Dogman to be “a lot to handle” but ultimately felt that Besson pulled it off. Thanks largely to Jones’ commitment.
“It’s a lot to handle and also silly, but Besson often pulls it off — thanks in no small part to a commanding performance by the chameleon-like Caleb Landry Jones, who manages to be touching and slightly terrifying at the same time.”
The 20 Best Revenge-Themed Movies That Came Out Recently
Many great films explore the dark corners of human nature and the lengths one can go to seek justice.
Deadline’s Damon Wise echoed these sentiments, suggesting that audiences just “go with it.”
“If you go with it, Dogman is a breezy, unexpectedly tender slice of pulp that takes a simple idea and works it to the max.”
Finally, Fandomwire’s Manuel São Bento described Jones’ performance and transformation as nothing less than “mesmerizing.”
“Caleb Landry Jones delivers the best performance of his career with a mesmerizing performance, completely transforming himself into the complex, exceptionally human protagonist who finds unconditional love and compassion in God’s greatest creation: dogs.”
