It’s now been well over a year since it was announced that Fate: The Winx Saga would not be returning for a third season on Netflix, having premiered its second season just a few months before that. As you may have heard, however, the series will continue in 2024 with the release of a brand-new comic book that picks up where the show left off.
Despite its cancelation all that time ago, the show remains one of the most actively campaigned for titles to get renewed, even in 2024. Fans continue to fill Netflix’s social replies with petition links. One of the biggest campaigns for the revival of the show now boasts over 150,000 signatures. Despite a dedicated fanbase, at the time of cancelation we noted that likely poor viewership was behind the untimely cancelation.
Novels for Fate: The Winx Saga isn’t new for the franchise, with two tie-in books having been released alongside seasons 1 and 2 from Ava Corrigan and Sarah Rees Brennan.
First unveiled at New York Comic Con at the tail end of 2023, Fate: The Winx Saga Vol. 1: Dark Destiny serves as a “continuation” of the Netflix Original series adaptation, which was cut short with some glaring cliffhangers.
Olivia Cuartero-Briggs is writing the new continuation but notably wasn’t involved in the original show. That said, she’s a perfect fit for the franchise, having worked in both TV and comics before. For TV, she’s worked on Queen of the South and The Arrangement. On the author side, she’s worked on Mary Shelley’s Monster Hunter and, more recently, Jill and the Killers, which has been receiving rave reviews.
Christianne Gillenardo-Goudreau (Avatar: The Last Airbender Chibis Volume 1–Aang’s Unfreezing Day, Plants vs. Zombies) serves as the book’s illustrator.
What can you expect from the new novel? Reportedly the book picks right up after where the series leaves off and promises to pick up on the unfinished threads of season 2. Cuartero-Briggs also promised darker themes and lots of new twists (peppered with some new romance). Here’s the official synopsis for the new book, which runs at 102 pages, sourced from GoodReads:
“A short time has passed since Bloom entered the Realm of Darkness to find her mother, and she is still missing. Despite this, her friends at the magical school of Alfea are gearing up for a new year of classes, new students….and new challenges. Still reeling from the loss of Bloom, Aisha, Kat, Terra, Stella, Musta, Riven and Sky are struggling to get used to their new normal.
When the school is attacked by fairy powers few have seen before, our heroes are faced with a mystery and an enemy that could spell doom for them all. During their darkest hour, can they rely on the wielder of the Dragon Flame to return to them? Or has Bloom been lost forever?”
Fate: The Winx Saga Vol. 1 Dark Destiny will be released in all good bookshops and online through storefronts like Amazon starting July 2nd, 2024.
