Most likely, if you’re about to visit a restaurant, you’ve looked up that restaurant on Google Maps. Google Maps is one of the most popular navigation apps on the market, and with this new feature, it just got much better. Now, Google Maps actually matches pictures of food to menu items.
Previously, when you looked up a restaurant, you would see menu items through pictures taken by users. However, you wouldn’t really know what you’re looking at. A lot of the time, you will want to look at the pictures taken by customers to get a good idea of what a place serves. Those are the most natural representations of the food itself. They’re certainly more believable than pre-planned shots of dolled-up food.
Google Maps now matches pictures of food to menu items
You’re at a restaurant you’ve never been to before, and describe a dish you saw on Google Maps while researching that place. You wouldn’t want to say “Can I have the soup that maybe looks like it has chunks of potato in it with some sort of pork or beef broth and maybe some sort of beef… or is that sausage?” Ideally, you’ll want to know exactly what you’re ordering.
Well, if you’re looking at a restaurant on Google Maps, the platform now matches pictures of food to actual menu items. So, if you see a picture of a certain type of dish while looking up a restaurant, you’ll see the name of that dish right under the image. So, when it’s time to order, you know exactly what you’re getting.
Under the name of the dish, you’ll see two buttons. When you tap on the Suggest an edit button, you’ll see four options appear in a pop-up. These are Edit dish name, Incorrect this name, Offensive dish name, and Dish not served here. When you choose an option, the owner of the business will be notified.
The second button will take you to a menu for that restaurant. There, you’ll be able to search for other dishes that may pique your interest.
