Are you a video game enthusiast currently on your next game hunt? Then try playing classic NES Duck Hunt. Nintendo Entertainment System released this simple yet adventurous game in 1984. The game comes with an interesting NES Zapper light gun, your perfect companion that lights up the screen.
The classic Duck Hunt with Super Mario was the best thing in gaming to happen for that decade. This post rewinds the 8-bit gaming era and takes you through a journey of the most-loved 80s game. Let’s take on our gaming consoles, shall we?
Gameplay and Mechanics of Duck Hunt
Duck Hunt is a shooter game with continuously moving on-screen targets. The player shoots the targets using the NES Zapper light gun. There are three modes in the game: Game A, Game B, and Game C.
Here’s how they work:
Game A
Game A is a beginner-level round. In this game, one target (duck) appears on the screen. The player has to shoot the target in a maximum of three attempts before it flies away. There are 10 sessions of 1 on-screen target each in Game A.
What’s the challenge? To advance to the next level, the player must shoot a minimum number of ducks, or it’s a “game over”. If you shoot all the 10 ducks, bravo, you get a “perfect bonus.” As the game progresses, each level gets difficult. Moreover, the targets fly faster, and they are hard to shoot.
Finally, when you beat level 99, you enter the impossible “kill stage”. Here, ducks move erratically and rapidly to the edges of the screen. As the name suggests, it is impossible to clear this round, and the game ends. Additionally, Game A also has the feature to add a second player.
Game B
Like Game A, Game B follows the same gameplay, with an increase in the difficulty level. This time two on-screen ducks (targets) appear simultaneously on the screen. The player gets three chances and the same time limit. Overall, there are 5 duck sessions in the game, making it a bit shorter.
When the player is skilled enough to pass level 99, next comes level 0. Unlike level 0 of game A, here, the ducks fly slowly, giving time to shoot. On clearing level 0, the player returns to round 1.
Game C
Here, it’s not ducks but all about pigeons! Game C replaces the ducks with clay disks or pigeons. So, why is it called the “ultimate challenge”? As the game starts, two pigeons (targets) appear on the screen. The player must shoot the targets with three bullets and a given time limit. As the pigeons fly high, shooting them becomes challenging. What’s the best way? To get through the level, shoot the pigeons as soon as they appear on the screen.
As in Game A, if the player beats the level 99, they reach the super-difficult level 0. Here, the targets appear slowly from the bottom and disappear in the middle of the screen.
Wrapping Up
Duck Hunt has been a favorite childhood 80s game for many. The classic game was a super hit among the arcade and video consoles in the 1980s. Moreover, it popularized the light gun video games, given the sense of mystery and enthusiasm surrounding the extraordinary device. The game captivated its users with the one-of-the-kind light gun technology of the zapper and its simplicity.
