According to a new report, the iPhone 17 Pro will feature Apple’s very own Wi-Fi 7 chip. This information comes from Jeff Pu, a well-known Apple analyst. He usually has information from the companies within Apple’s supply chain.
The iPhone 17 Pro could ship with Apple’s very own Wi-Fi 7 chip
Those of you who are out of the loop. Broadband currently supplies Apple with Wi-Fi chips. Well, the company gets a chip with combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. That could change in 2025, though.
Jeff Pu not only things that Apple will start using that chip in 2025, with the ‘Pro’ series devices, but expand the usage to all of its smartphones in 2026. So, the entire iPhone 18 series could feature Apple’s very own Wi-Fi chips.
This is not exactly all that surprising. We’ve seen reports in the past that Apple is planning to do this at some point. Back in January, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a well-known source for Apple information, said that Apple is working on this. And yes, Apple’s chip will also combine both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The company is also working on its own 5G modem
Some of you will also recall that Apple was rumored to use its own 5G modem. Those rumors were all over the place, ranging from “it’s coming next year”, to “it has been canceled altogether”.
We’re not sure what will happen in the end, but the latest piece of info seems to hint at a 2027 launch date for Apple’s in-house 5G modem. It seems like the company’s Wi-Fi chip will arrive sooner than that.
Needless to say, having its own hardware would reduce Apple’s dependence on external suppliers. That’s basically what every smartphone OEM would want, but it’s not always possible, of course.
What is also worth noting is that Jeff Pu said, back in August, that the iPhone 16 Pro devices will support Wi-Fi 7. Those devices will not include Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, though, of course.
