The film has been shrouded in secrecy until recently, and even the poster is as enigmatic as it is revealing, with the central image showing what appears to be three huge hairy fingers reaching out of an open window. What we do know is that the John Krasinski-conceived movie will be moving up its release date from May 24 to May 17 2024. Check out the mysterious and the poster below.

John Krasinski’s newest project is a fantasy comedy that deals in imaginary friends…the IF of the title. The film is the tale of a man who can see and talk to people’s imaginary friends, befriending those that have been forgotten or discarded. However, some imaginary friends, lacking love and friendship, turn to the dark side, and it’s up to Reynolds’ character to save the world from those that become evil.” This sounds exactly the kind of premise that Reynolds has made a success of with movies like Free Guy.

The movie is dear to Krasinski, who previously explained how it is an extremely personal movie. The movie is speculated to have an Amblin-style feel. This is reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s classic, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In a previous interview, Krasinski said:

“IF is a movie that I made for my kids because I don’t think they’re allowed to see A Quiet Place; Emily [Blunt] calls it PG-40, ‘You’ll get to see it when you’re 40!’ So I had to make a movie that they could see, and I’m really, really excited about it […] Ryan Reynolds is as good as it gets in every single way, shape, and form, and this incredible phenom of an actress, Cailey Fleming, is in the movie. For me, it was just about, what if we could tell a story about these time capsules? Imaginary friends are adorable and all those things, but they’re also time capsules of your hopes, dreams, and ambitions when you were the most fertile of a brain, and it never goes away. I think we’re told that we’re adults instead of what if you realize that you never stopped being a kid.”

The plot follows a young girl played by Cailey Fleming, who suddenly gains the ability to see everyone’s imaginary friends. This ability is triggered by a tumultuous event in her life. As she witnesses the magic around her, she realizes that these imaginary friends were the creations of people when they were children but were forgotten as they grew up.

Krasinski revealed that the genesis of IF goes back seven years to when he conceived the story. He feels humbled to finally bring it to life. He mentions that the movie is made for his children since they cannot watch his other movie, A Quiet Place, which his wife and co-star Emily Blunt humorously refers to as PG-40.
