Huawei has been cut off from the American market following a ban imposed by the US government in 2019. It didn’t take long for Google to then cut the company off from Google Play services. With Black Friday coming up, Huawei has decided to remind the public of what they’re missing.
In a tweet, the company joked (via) that it is offering “100% off” on its smartphones in the U.S. The company posted a follow-up tweet saying – “OK, everyone. It’s just a joke. We can’t sell anything in the USA.”
Although Huawei devices can still arrive in the US through unofficial channels from online retailers, these units generally don’t have a warranty. Keeping this in mind, it’s generally not a safe bet to get Huawei devices from these sources.
Needless to say, the company was hit pretty hard by the US ban, with billions lost in revenue since 2019. Huawei even sold off its HONOR brand late last year to make up for the losses, though it doesn’t appear to be going too smoothly either.
Ex-Huawei company, HONOR, recently launched two new phones in Europe
Some HONOR-branded phones are arriving in Europe, starting with the HONOR 50 and the HONOR 50 Lite. However, the company’s hopes for a US launch seem to have hit a roadblock, with a handful of US Senators recently requesting The White House to blacklist the HONOR brand.
This is despite the fact that Huawei sold the HONOR brand to a consortium of 40 companies last year. Notably, the company said it wouldn’t hold any shares in HONOR after the sale. The new buyers set up a firm called Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology for the company’s operation. An official statement later said that the ownership change would not impact the development of HONOR’s devices.
But European customers can now get the HONOR 50 and 50 Lite for €529/599 and €299, respectively. The former is the more powerful version of the two, while both variants also support Google’s suite of services, including the Play Store.
The high-end HONOR 50 offers a combination of metal and glass, while the 120Hz 6.57-inch curved fullHD+ OLED screen puts it among the best in the business. The smartphone features the Snapdragon 778G chipset and is available in 6 or 8GB of RAM variants plus 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.
There’s a 108-megapixel primary camera sensor accompanied by three additional sensors. The front has a solitary 32-megapixel sensor for selfies. The HONOR 50 Lite feature a slightly larger 6.67-inch HONOR FullView display coupled with 66W fast charging support and quad rear cameras.
