Directed by George Miller from a screenplay he co-wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa will be led by The Northman and Last Night in Soho star Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa, with the actor taking on the role first portrayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road.
The rest of the cast includes Tom Burke (The Wonder, The Lazarus Project), Nathan Jones (Mad Max: Fury Road), Angus Sampson (The Lincoln Lawyer, Mad Max: Fury Road), Daniel Webber (11.22.63, Escape from Pretoria), and Lachy Hulme (Three Thousand Years of Longing), with Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Endgame, Extraction) due to star as the villain of the piece.
Furiosa Finds Chris Hemsworth Playing the Villain
MCU actor and Thor star Chris Hemsworth will cut a very different figure in Furiosa, starring as the story’s main antagonist opposite Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa. Hemsworth has discussed his role in the Mad Max project, in which he sports a giant, glorious beard, revealing that his approach to playing the villain suddenly “clicked.”
“It’s massive and otherworldly and everything you’d expect from the Mad Max world. [Miller] has managed to do something unexpected, which has blown me away. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Hemsworth continued. “It was starting to get scary the closer I got to shooting. Then, all of a sudden, it clicked, and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had.”
Hemsworth has also described Furiosa as the project he is most proud of, and a major highlight of his career so far.
“[Furiosa is] by far the best experience of my career, and something I feel the most proud of. It made me think, the work isn’t what’s exhausting, it’s what kind of work it is, and how invested I am in it and if it is challenging in the right ways.”
Furiosa is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on 24 May 2024 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
