The first trailer for gritty superhero sequel Code 8: Part II has been released by Netflix. As with the preceding installment, this new film will star real-life cousins Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell, who are no stranger to superhero projects. Both of them were in the Arrowverse on The CW. However, while Robbie Amell’s character, Firestorm, had powers, Stephen Amell played the famously non-powered Green Arrow. In the Code 8 series, both cousins get to play characters with superhuman abilities, with the sequel building on the first movie, which was released in 2019. Check out the new trailer for Code 8: Part II below:

Code 8 is set in a world where 4% of the population have extraordinary abilities. However, instead of being celebrities (like in hit comic book series The Boys), the superhumans are ostracized and destitute, with many of them having to resort to crime in order to get by. That’s the position that main character Connor Reed (Robbie Amell) finds himself in when he agrees to work with Garrett Kelton (Stephen Amell) on behalf of a crime kingpin. Together, the two of them commit a series of robberies while having to deal with a militarized police force.

According to a new plot summary from Entertainment Weekly, the sequel picks up with Connor now working as a jainor and trying to distance himself from Garrett after the events of the last movie. However, when 14-year-old Pac (Sirena Gulamgaus) is targeted by corrupt police officers for investigating the wrongful death of her brother, Connor finds himself having to team up with Garrett to protect her. Besides the Amells, other members of the film’s cast consist of Aaron Abrams, Alex Mallari Jr., and Jean Yoon.

When the first movie was released, Robbie Amell compared the Arrowverse and Code 8 to each other while speaking with Entertainment Weekly:

“In both projects, the sci-fi is the entertainment part but ultimately you’re trying to find the grounded side of things and the relatable side of things. That’s what we wanted to dive into with Code 8; we wanted it to be a story that everybody could relate to and the sci-fi to blend into the background. That’s why we went with the main thing being how far someone would go to save someone they love. You can find that in a lot of projects.”

It all began as a 2016 proof-of-concept film and Indiegogo campaign to raise $200,000 to become a full-length movie. Thanks to overwhelming fan support, which the trailer for the sequel acknowledges, the campaign was able to raise more than $2.4 million and release the finished film in 2019. Code 8 was directed by Jeff Chan and written by Chris Pare, both of whom also returned to work on the sequel.

Following the release of the original Code 8, there were plans for a TV spin-off that would have had Chan serve as showrunner and writer alongside Pare. It was supposed to air on Quibi, a former streaming service whose output included The Stranger series with Maika Monroe and Dane DeHaan. Quibi eventually went under and a Code 8 series ultimately never happened. What would have happened had been kept under wraps, but it was reportedly different from the plot of Code 8: Part II.

Code 8: Part II is set to released on Netflix in 2024, though an exact date has not yet been revealed.
