Neon has unveiled the official trailer for Perfect Days, the latest feature from auteur Wim Wenders. The drama uses vignettes led by Kōji Yakusho, who stars as a public toilet cleaner named Hirayama, to tell a simple and beautiful story about life. The trailer, set to Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” follows Hirayama through what starts as a typical day. He rises while it’s still dark outside, tends to his plants, and, with a smile on his face, steps out to get to work. Once done for the day, Hirayama enjoys a bike ride home through Tokyo. Then something surprising happens. Check it out below.

Perfect Days premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or and earned the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Best Actor Award for Kōji Yakusho. It has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and has been selected as the Japanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Following its Cannes premiere, Perfect Days had screenings at Telluride, TIFF, London, and, most recently, the New York Film Festival. A special engagement at New York’s Angelika Film Center will take place today, November 10, and the film will hit theaters throughout the US early next year.

Check out Perfect Days‘ official synopsis below:

“Hirayama seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past.”
