More than two years after the launch of the OnePlus Watch, the company may finally have a second-gen model in the pipeline. The OnePlus Watch 2 has just picked up regulatory approval from India’s BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). An earlier leak said the wearable will feature a round design and debut in 2024.
The OnePlus Watch 2 is on the way, certification confirms
Spotted by MySmartPrice, the OnePlus Watch 2 received the BIS certification on October 31 with the model number OPWWE231 (the original watch had the model number W301GB). As expected, the listing doesn’t give us any other information about the upcoming wearable. However, the regulatory body usually adds unannounced products to its website after the development has been completed.
This suggests the OnePlus Watch 2 is nearing its production stage and may be headed to the market soon. A tipster recently claimed that the device will arrive in 2024. However, they didn’t specify if they were talking about its initial launch or a release in a specific market. OnePlus may debut the wearable in China or India in the coming weeks and bring it to other markets later, possibly alongside the OnePlus 12 series in early 2024.
While that’s just speculation, this BIS listing is a confirmation that the OnePlus Watch 2 is on the way. The company unveiled the first-gen model back in March 2021. In 2024, it will be three years old. The OPPO sub-brand has already stopped selling the device through its official website. Well, it had a lot of shortcomings and likely never attracted many buyers. Hopefully, the new model will fix the most glaring issues.
OnePlus has to improve in a lot of areas
It would do a world of good if OnePlus shipped the upcoming watch with Wear OS instead of custom RTOS. This will bring support for the Google Play Store, and effectively, more apps. The original model lacked big time in this regard. It was more of a fitness tracker made to look like a smartwatch. Well, it wasn’t the best at health monitoring either. The only good thing about the watch was its battery life.
Otherwise, the original OnePlus Watch was nowhere near matching the feature set of Samsung, Google, and Apple’s watches. It appeared the company rushed to release the device, so it could have a smartwatch under its belt. Rumors have hinted at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset for the second-gen model, so early signs are promising. Time will tell whether the firm lives up to expectations this time around.
