Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.”
Written, directed and produced by Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell, Saltburn features an all-star cast that includes Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Alison Oliver (Conversations with Friends), and Archie Madekwe (Gran Turismo).
Saltburn Could Prove to Be Divisive
Saltburn premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival back in August, and while it has received praise from several prominent critics, it could prove to be divisive as many adore it while others have found a lot to dislike. Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph awarded Saltburn a perfect rating of 5/5 and commended the film for being so “badly behaved.”
“The film’s secret ingredient, though, is its sheer, nude-bungee-jumping-level fearlessness. British cinema hasn’t been this badly behaved since the days of Nic Roeg and Ken Russell, and was frankly in need of the shake-up.”
The praise continues courtesy of Maureen Lee Lenker of Entertainment Weekly, who expects that fans of the movie will return to it over and over again.
“Its endless visual and literary layers will bring its ardent admirers back to it again and again, because it is a triumph of the cinema of excess, in all its orgiastic, unapologetic glory.”
Emma Kiely of Collider meanwhile awarded Saltburn a ‘B’ grade and says:
“Saltburn doesn’t eat the rich so much as it licks them, slurps them, and then spits them back out.”
Now, this is where things get a little more critical, as Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair left Saltburn curious to see what Fennell might do with another novel.
“Saltburn proves an engaging sit for the majority of its run, and thus a stumble — even a big one — can mostly be forgiven. If anything, the film makes me curious to see what Fennell might do with another classic novel.”
And moving into the deeply critical, David Rooney of THR found Saltburn to be lacking in original ideas saying:
“A stylish but ultimately silly patchwork of borrowed ideas.”
This sentiment was echoed by Peter Debruge of Variety who adds:
“Fennell’s debut promised a fearless original voice and style. “Saltburn” certainly has attitude, but nothing new to say.”
Saltburn is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom and the United States on November 17, 2023, receiving a limited theatrical release before expanding wide on November 22, 2023.
