If, for some reason, you want to forward specific emails and you use Gmail, you’ll be glad to know that it’s possible. We’re actually here to show you how to forward specific emails in Gmail. Before we get started with that, please do note that this can be done only via the web. So, you’ll need to do it that way, you cannot do it via your Android app, as the feature is not available there.
Another thing to note is that you can only forward messages for a single Gmail address, and not an email group or alias. There are a lot of reasons why you would want to automatically forward some emails, especially if you need to group them for work in specific inboxes and so on. Whatever your reason may be, it’s doable. Down below, we’ll guide you one step at a time, and you’ll also find some screenshots to help you set this up. So, let’s get started.
How to automatically forward specific emails in Gmail
The first thing you’ll need to do is open your Gmail inbox. Open up an account from which you’d like to automatically forward emails, of course. Once you’ve done that, tap the gear icon at the top, as shown below.
Once the side menu opens, you’ll need to tap on the “See all settings” option. That is the first option at the top.
All Gmail settings for your account will open. In that menu, you’ll need to tap on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” option. That is one of the options at the top, in a tab of sorts.
There you’ll see the “Add a forward address” option, That is the first option in this menu. If you choose that option, you’ll be able to enter an email address you’d like to forward your emails to. That is the first step that we need to take, as you won’t be able to set up any filters without it. So, tap that option.
Once that is done, you’ll be asked to enter a forwarding email address, an email address to which you’d like to forward some of your emails. Do that, and tap “Next”.
You’ll be asked to confirm your choice, tap “Proceed”.
A confirmation code will be sent to the email address that is being set as receiving address. You’ll need to navigate to it, and click the link that is being sent there, to confirm this link. Once you’ve done that, return to the email account from which you’re forwarding, and refresh the page. Once you’ve done that, you should see the email address forwarding option in the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” menu. Now we can proceed with creating a filter for forwarding. Tap the “creating a filter” link, which is located right below the “Add a forward address” option.
Once you tap that option, a new pop-up menu will appear, giving you granular options for forwarding. For example, if you need to forward emails from a specific account, then type in that email address in the “From” field. You can also forward emails that contain specific words, and so on. There are a lot of options here. Set it up the way you want. Once you’re done, tap the “Create filter” option.
A new menu will open, letting you set up your forwarding. For example, you can mark that message as read in your current email inbox, as it has been forwarded to another address. That is just one example, you can set it up as granular as you can. What you need to set up in order for forwarding to work is the forwarding address, of course. Tap the “Add forwarding address” option. If you already have a forwarding address set up, you’ll be able to select it, if not, it will revert you back to the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” menu to set one up via the “Add a forwarding address” option. Once you’re done, repeat the steps, and add that forwarding address to the filter you created. Once you’re done, tap the “Create filter” option.
You’ll be reverted back to the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” menu. At this point, all you need to do is select the “Forward a copy of incoming mail to” option, and decide whether you’d like to keep a copy of it in your current inbox. Simply tap the checkbox, as shown below.
That’s it, you’re done. An automatic forward has been set up.
You can easily disable email forwarding
What if you want to disable this, though? As in automatic forwarding in general. Well, the procedure is simple. You’ll need to navigate to the same “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” settings as before, just follow the steps above. Once you’re in that menu, simply tap the “Disable forwarding” option, then make sure to save your changes.
