The iPhone 15 series has encountered various issues since its launch, ranging from the titanium chassis lacking colour coating to the phone overheating for no apparent reason (now fixed). Adding more to its troubles, some iPhone 15 Pro Max users are now reporting severe burn-in problems on their units.

Many affected users took to platforms like Reddit to express their concerns, complaining about the problem. One user posted a photo of their display with a ghostly image of the virtual QWERTY keyboard, with each letter imprinted on the keys. However, despite the issue, users are not panicking, considering the devices are new, and Apple will replace them.

“I had heard that some people were experiencing burn-in issues on theirs, but I wasn’t noticing anything on mine until a couple of nights ago when I started to see a small amount of what looked like ghosting. Upon further inspection, it is definitely burn-in. Putting a dark grey image up at low brightness really reveals it,” said one user.

Screen burn-in on a new device?

To put things into perspective, screen burn-in refers to a phenomenon when an image persists on the screen, even during different device activities. Although this phenomenon does occur on OLED displays, it typically takes a long usage time before such displays show signs of burn-in. And considering that iPhone 15 models have been out for just over a month, enthusiast Tarun Vats, who first reported on the issue, believes that the problem is more likely a case of temporary image retention.

Possible causes behind the issue?

While it’s challenging to pinpoint the exact reason behind the problem, there could be a few potential causes. These include a faulty batch of displays, potentially leaning towards a hardware problem, or the burn-in could be related to the always-on display feature exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. However, the fact that the iPhone 14 Pro models, which also had this feature, have been in use for over a year without incident makes this explanation less likely.

Nevertheless, if you experience the same issue on your iPhone 15 Pro Max, it is advisable to visit the Apple Store and get a replacement unit since all the iPhone 15 series is still under warranty.
