Wish is not just another title in the long filmography of the House of Mouse. Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, the film was planned as a grand tribute to the studio’s legacy and all the magical stories they have released throughout their 100 years of existence.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Buck and Veerasunthorn confessed that not even they are able to count how many references to past Disney projects were included in Wish:

“They’re all over the movie. We are compiling a list, and I couldn’t tell you how long it is now. Each department puts things in and there’s some that we don’t even know are there yet, and we may not know until they tell us.”

In fact, the story was inspired by an element that appears in one of the studio’s oldest films, Pinocchio, the famous wishing star. This is because Wish was intended as an adventure that true Disney fans would enjoy like no one else, something the directors made very clear:

“We wanted to make a movie that celebrates the joy of Disney and make a movie for the fans. It’s a hundred years. The Disney audience has kept us going and kept this studio going, and so there’s so much of that.”

Wish is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on November 22, 2023.
