Soul Mates Continues the Escape Room Horror Trend
The deadly escape room is a staple of the horror-slash-thriller genre, and there are plenty of examples out there for those who want nothing more than to watch a group of perplexed victims attempting to get out with their lives.
One of the most famous examples of the lethal escape room is the 1997 effort, Cube. Directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali, Cube centers on a collection of strangers who awaken to find themselves placed in the titular giant cube. As the cube shifts and changes in seemingly supernatural ways, they must work together to escape this endless maze of deadly traps.
Cube has since gained a cult following thanks to its surrealist approach to the escape room idea and has become one of the most well-renowned examples of the horror genre. Cube was remade this year from Yasuhiko Shimizu of Japan.
Of course, the Saw franchise (which Soul Mates has been compared to) also features all manner of grim and often grotesque escape challenges as the serial killer Jigsaw puts his victims to various tests. Fans of the series will soon be able to once again bask in the gory delights of Jigsaw, as sequel/prequel Saw X is all set to land in theaters on September 29, 2023.
Set just a few weeks after the first Saw, Saw X finds John Kramer traveling to Mexico after learning of a potential “miracle” cure for his terminal cancer. However, he soon realizes that the entire operation is a fraudulent scam. Finding a new purpose, the killer and his apprentice abduct the con artists and subject them to a horrifying new series of traps.
Soul Mates brings the unique dating twist to it, though, and should be a worthy addition to this very specific genre. The film is produced by Manny Halley, Rodney Turner II, Yolanda Halley and William K. Baker, and is due to be released in theaters everywhere on October 20, 2023.
