Amazon just held its latest hardware event, but it seemed to announce more about software than hardware. During the event, we heard about some neat additions coming to Alexa. According to Amazon (via Engadget), Alexa is coming out with a new Emergency Assist feature that could save your life.

Voice assistants are always there when you need them. You can summon them to look up recipes, get traffic information, search for songs, and much more. However, what if you’re in serious trouble? What if your life is at stake? Well, Amazon has something for you to keep you and your family safe.

Amazon announces the Alexa Emergency Assist

This is a handy feature to have if you or a family member needs medical assistance. In the case of an emergency, you can simply call out “Alexa, call for help”. When you do that, Alexa will send first responders to your house. When you sign up for the program, you’ll input certain information like your address, the medications that you have to take, allergies, and other relevant health information.

Since Amazon already has this information, it will then send the responders to your house without you needing to summon the assistant again. It’s a nifty and easy way to get emergency help sent to your house quickly.

Alexa Emergency Assist is coming soon to the US market. We don’t know when/if it will make its way over to other countries in the future. When it launches, it will cost you $6/month. That’s not a bad price for such a useful feature. If you don’t want to bother with monthly payments, there’s a $59/year plan that you can also choose.

This feature will be compatible with all Alexa-enabled devices. So, if you’re still rocking the first-generation Alexa speaker from 2014, you can have access to this feature.
