The newly released trailer for director Nicholas Tomnay’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2010’s The Perfect Host, What You Wish For, finds Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines star Nick Stahl in the noir-inspired culinary thriller. This morality tale follows Ryan (Nick Stahl), a down-on-his-luck chef who gets more than he bargained for when he steps into the life of an old culinary school pal, a private chef for the über-rich. “After toiling unsatisfyingly one roast chicken at a time in a chain hotel kitchen, Ryan (Nick Stahl) jumps at the opportunity for a holiday reunion deep in the rainforests of Latin America with his old culinary school buddy, Jack (Brian Groh), whom he hasn’t seen in 12 years. More pressingly, though, Ryan has incurred a large gambling debt to a very bad man who desperately wants his money back and isn’t above hurting him or his loved ones to get it.
As Ryan sips expensive wine and swims in the pool of a multi-million-dollar bungalow, he listens enviously to Jack, who has made a more than comfortable living as a private chef. Jet-setting around the globe in first-class luxury to provide exclusive dining experiences for the ultra-wealthy, Jack seemingly has everything that Ryan has always wanted.
“The reward always matches the atrocity,” says Jack cryptically one evening before making a sudden, dramatic disappearance. Ryan makes the fateful decision to assume Jack’s identity along with his ample bank account to settle the debt, but now he must also shoulder his employer’s unique culinary demands.”

Serving as equal parts Alfred Hitchcock, The Twilight Zone, and film noir, What You Wish For is the second feature film from writer-director Nick Tomnay. Beginning his career as a commericals editor and director in Sydney, Australia, Tomnay first broke out as a director to watch in 2010 with his debut feature film The Perfect Host, which finds Emmy Award winner and Frasier star David Hyde Pierce playing against type as a mysterious, colorful character, who may be a lot more sinister than he first appears…
Nick Stahl meanwhile is best known for starring as John Connor in the major action blockbuster Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. The actor has also excelled in roles in the likes of Sin City, Disturbing Behavior, The Thin Red Line, In the Bedroom, Bully, and the acclaimed HBO series Carnivàle.
What You Wish For is a project several years in the making, with Tomnay sharing that he “tried to create the sort of film that I often want to see as an audience member.”
What You Wish For is scheduled to debut at Austin’s Fantastic Fest on Friday, September 22nd.
