There’s something spooky going on with the local senior citizens in the new trailer for horror flick The Elderly. Coming courtesy of Darkstar Pictures, the Spanish horror film (titled Viejos in Spanish) hits theaters on October 13. The trailer kicks off with a weather report, and in the midst of the scorching heat, an older woman jumps to her death. Her husband, Manuel, is asleep in his bed. The film follows the tale of the widow, as he navigates a lonely life following his wife’s suicides. His son welcomes Manuel into his home in an effort to help his heartbroken, and mentally declining, father.

As if grief wasn’t enough to contend with, though, Manuel also finds himself dealing with eerie occurrences and visions. But is it dementia, or are there supernatural elements at play? And why are the other seniors in Madrid suddenly also acting weird? Check out the newly released trailer for The Elderly below:

The film stars Zorion Eguileor, who audiences may recognize from Netflix’s sci-fi thriller The Platform, alongside Paula Gallego, Gustavo Salmerón, Irene Anula and Engela López Gamonal. The Elderly made its world premiere last year at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival and is due to land in theaters October 13 as well as being made available on VOD and Blu-ray beginning on Halloween. The horror flick is written by Javier Trigales, Raúl Cerezo and Rubén Sánchez Trigos.

The Elderly, which currently holds a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, has gained consistent praise from critics for its brutal ending. Discussing the film’s unnerving conclusion, Kat Hughes of The Hollywood News writes, “Literal carnage is set in motion, the devastation amplified by the emotional gravitas for the characters. Were it not for the slow burn building to it, this climax would be much more of a whimper. As it stands, it is bold, brutal, and perhaps one of the best Spanish horror endings since [Rec]. The Elderly more than rewards the time invested in the slow burn story thanks to some excellent construction work from its directors.”

The Elderly marks the second directorial collaboration between Fernando González Gómez and Raúl Cerezo. The longtime friends co-directed the film following their successful joint directorial feature, The Passenger (La pasajera). The film, which hit theaters last year, follows a group of four people: a mother and daughter, a woman trying to make her way to her father and a former bullfighter, sharing a van on a trip across Spain. While traveling, their vehicle hits a woman on the side of the road. Trying to aid her, they bring her inside the van, only to discover that she’s been infected by a parasitic alien.

In a previous interview with MovieWeb, following the release of The Passengers, Cerezo spoke fondly about the partnership between him and González Gómez, and why it works:

“There is something strange in the filmmaker that has a lot to do with ego: how am I going to share authorship? And there is concern for, as I say, your ego, not the story,” said Raúl Cerezo. “Curiously, our union was out of necessity: I needed to make my debut, and Fernando, with his second film, was making his debut in the horror genre. I gave him a shared project and he gave me the key to a prolific and courageous production company. But it would be temporary, after that, it would be every man for himself. The thing is that it went so well that we have even made a label that we will fight to keep telling stories. We are the FEREZO, the perfect union of Fernando and Cerezo. We join forces and we are united by a maxim: there will be nothing in the films we make that we don’t think is perfect for the two of us. It could be signed by just one of us. What matters is the story and the best way to tell it, without being an authorial Frankenstein.”

The Passenger is available to rent on multiple platforms. The Elderly hits cinemas October 13.
