A Dutch smartphone manufacturer, Fairphone, has just announced a new smartphone. The device in question is called the Fairphone 5, and it’s actually quite interesting for several reasons.
Fairphone always focused on making easily repairable phones, that are as much environmentally friendly as possible. On top of that, this phone comes with a huge software-related promise, 8 years of software updates.
The Fairphone 5 is even more repairable than before, and more powerful too
This time around, the phone does look more modern than before, and carries better specs. Do note that this is not a high-end smartphone, though.
The Fairphone 5 is made from recycled aluminum, tin, nickel, zinc, copper, magnesium, indium, and plastics. Fairphone actually worked with the Alliance for Responsible Mining, the Fair Cobalt Alliance, and the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance.
In addition to that, a living wage bonus ends up being paid to the 2,000 people who assemble the phone, and its components like the battery, vibration monitor, and so on. The phone has eleven modules in total now, which users can easily replace, as shown in JerryRigEverything’s video below.
As you can see, the device comes with a flat display, and its bottom bezel is a bit thicker than the rest. A centered display camera hole is included here, and two cameras are on the back. Those cameras are placed inside an interesting-looking triangle camera island.
It has an AMOLED display this time around, and offers expandable storage too
There is a 6.46-inch 2770 x 1224 AMOLED display included here, and it offers a 90Hz refresh rate. The company also included 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage here. You can expand that storage via the microSD card port (up to 2TB), though.
Fairphone opted for an enterprise-focused chip from Qualcomm, the QCM6490. That should be an equivalent to the Snapdragon 778G, in case you were wondering. The phone is also IP55 certified by the way, for water and dust resistance.
The company included three 50MP cameras
You’ll find three 50-megapixel cameras here. Two are placed on the back (wide and ultrawide ones), and one on the front. All three cameras can record 4K video, by the way. The main camera uses Sony’s IMX800 sensor, and the ultrawide one utilizes the Sony IMX858 sensor.
A 4,200mAh battery sits inside this phone, but we don’t know the charging speed here. Wireless charging is likely not supported. You’re getting Bluetooth 5.2 here, and Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz).
The Fairphone 5 comes in Gray, Sky Blue, and Transparent color options. The device is priced at €699.
