Can technology predict real love? That’s the question that Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou tries to answer in upcoming Apple TV+ original movie Fingernails, a drama that feels take right out of Black Mirror. The movie is set to debut next month at Toronto International Film Festival before its official release at the streaming platform on November third. Boasting an all-star trio in Jessie Buckley (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), the first trailer for the film has now been released.

“Anna and Ryan have found true love. It’s been proven by a controversial new technology,” the official synopsis reads. “There’s just one problem: Anna still isn’t sure. Then she takes a position at a love testing institute, and meets Amir.”

Fingernails stars Jessie Buckley, Jeremy Allen White, Riz Ahmed, Luke Wilson, and Annie Murphy, and is set in an alternative reality where technology has evolved far enough to help people find the love of their life, someone that really suits them according to different tests and data. In that context, Anna and Ryan were a happy couple until technology proves they’re not the best choice for each other, which makes her start to believe she may not be in love after all.

Who Are the Stars of Fingernails?

British actor Riz Ahmed began with several small roles, and his career slowly grew until becoming a critically acclaimed and highly praised performer, especially thanks to projects such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Nightcrawler, Mogul Mowgli, The Night Of, and Sound of Metal, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in 2021. A year later, he won one, but for Best Live Action Short Film for The Long Goodbye. Ahned is not only known for his work on screen, but also highly recognizes as a musician and an emblem in the world of rap.

Jeremy Allen White meanwhile is a true man of the moment. Even though he’s been acting for a while now, he hasn’t participated in many productions until The Bear came into the picture. The highly acclaimed FX drama premiered last year and became an instant hit, mostly because of White’s performance. The series premiered its second season earlier this year, and it too has seen huge success. He’ll soon star alongside Zac Efron in The Iron Claw, a sport drama that will tell the story of the Von Erich clan.

Jessie Buckley has also become one of the big names within the industry over the last couple of years. The star of Women Talking has been part of controversial but praised films like I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Charlie Kaufman and Men by Alex Garland, and has participated of some acclaimed series such as Fargo and Chernobyl.

Fingernails is due to be released in select theaters and on Apple TV+ on November 3, 2023.
